Is the sound from optical digital audio ideal for gaming?

I understand that digital audio (SP/DIF) optimizes the quality of 3-D sound especially in movies and music (if your soundcard has Dolby Digital of course). But people are telling me that digital audio is not ideal for gaming, for I don’t understand why.

Well I’ve never tried it with my xBox 360 but with my PS3 its got a optical output built in. So you just plug it in and change your options. It works for a PS3, probably works for an xBox 360 but I’ve never tried it.
